Life in a Stage

My mind’s eye
Is a theatre stage
velvet drawn curtains
yellow dim lights
shoes that clop, clop, clop across the waxy floor

act one with no music, no sound, no choreography
they bump into each other
no words to speak
no applause to appease
the smell of ripe gutters, wet leaves in the night
the rain that can’t wash away words with no meaning
and dates that never happened

act two
hungry for order, starving for love
bring the masses to me
we’ll dance, we’ll sing
we’ll warn them of the edges
we’ll show them their faces
write promises on walls
make keepsakes from threads

act three
the lights can be bright
no need to be shy
lift your chest to the ceiling
say the words in their order
stomp your feet in time and be done
gather the flowers they throw
together, we will, with arms

and with care

We’ll lay them where they belong

and Her grave will sink no more
